This is a message of remembrance for Joan Jara ((20 July 1927 - 12 November 2023)), dancer and activist, for refusing to pause to seek justice for the martyrdom of her husband Victor Jara (28 September 1932 - 16 September 1973) at the brutal hands of the bloodthirsty Pinochet régime in Chile and of a certain US centenarian international criminal monster whose recent death is well-documented and so will remain nameless here.
Not only did Joan keep the flame of Victor’s memory alive, she carried on in the proud tradition of seeking justice in bringing his murderers to justice, showing what cultural and musical leadership looks like.
In fact, in just a month after Joan’s transition, one soldier who is considered principally responsible for the kidnapping and murder of Victor has been extradited to Chile after 34 years as a fugitive in and, until recently revoked, most of it as a citizen of, the US. More remain on the run from justice.1
Still, the focus here is on the work of a dancer-warrior who spent the remainder of her life in taking steps to justice. Joan Jara left many lessons on how to make them.
Let’s learn some steps.
